I appreciate this, Sadie. Thanks for writing. My father and I are estranged, for reasons I will also not go into, and now he's also very sick. Needless to say, I have complicated feelings about this. I like seeing people appreciate their fathers on Father's Day, but I don't like being asked about my father. Unfortunately, my parents-in-law, who don't know my father, asked me if I'd had a chance to speak with my father on Father's Day. I tried to evade, but they kept pressing, until I was forced to reveal that he has cancer, prompting an outpouring of sympathy that only made me feel more uncomfortable.

So, yeah, celebrate your fathers, everyone, but don't ask people about their fathers on Father's Day unless you're familiar with their situation.
