I don't believe the shooting was staged, but Trump benefits from it all the same. He has long positioned himself as a champion of the people, persecuted for railing against the establishment. Now, the former president has dramatic imagery that he can use to complement the persecuted man-of-the-people narrative. It won't be long before Trump draws a line from the would-be assassin to the Democrats, which will continue to tear our country apart.
