Trump is a liar, a megalomaniac, a womanizer, a fraud, and a crook. He’s not a Christian, at least not a practicing one. He’s not a blue-collar guy, even if he strives to speak like one. He’s not a savvy businessman. He was born rich and got richer, just like most rich people. He doesn’t care about the U.S. beyond favorable tax code and what his acolytes are willing to do for him — a lot, as it turned out. He would gladly watch the country burn if it served to enrich him and consolidate his power. He is, by a wide margin, the worst president in modern American history. And we, as a country, deserve him. We’ve earned him.

In the opening scene of Aaron Sorkin’s HBO drama, The Newsroom, Will McAvoy, a famous news anchor played by Jeff Daniels, sits on a panel at a university. McAvoy is coy and quippy until a college student asks the following question:

“Can you say why America is the greatest country in the world?”

The first panelist says, “Diversity and opportunity.”

The second panelist says, “Freedom and freedom.”
